Art in a time of Turmoil

With all the turmoil happening on a daily basis, it can be difficult to find a sense of purpose or solid footing. It seems each day there is something new that seems deplorable, or indescribable, or somehow can't seem to possibly be happening in our country or our world. I know--I feel it too. I am at a loss for words.

I have scrolled social media and felt outrage at the acts in Charlottesville. I fear for the people in Lexington and I wonder what will happen tomorrow and the next day, and the next. After recently completing season one of The Handmaid's Tale on Hulu, there is a feeling to run to the closes boarder and claim refugee status. And yet, lack of words continue to permeate my thoughts.

The important thing to remembering in times like these is that we have power when we reach out to others for understanding, compassion, and community. We gain perspective when we honestly allow ourselves times to reflect. The above picture is the response in the Union Square subway station by individuals after the 2016 election. What this pictures provides me is multi-layered: A peace that others feel the way I feel and see what I see; Solidarity in the fact that even when you don't know what to say, you have something to say; Knowing that my purpose will always in some form be to reflect humanity back to itself and continue to change the world for the better.

I am sure there will more to say at some point. Some celebration of a new work created, or presentation. Participation in some life altering circumstance, but for now...all I can say is this: Every voice matters, even the ones that cannot be heard.

Dear Reader, allow yourself time to reflect. Then begin to act in whatever way makes sense to you. Choose to be the light that shines within a world of darkness. Allow yourself to carry the torch for those around you that cannot. Their strength will grow because you will show them how. By facing your fear and standing up again tyranny, you will become the light that we so desperately need. Be diligent and choose the path of strength, even when it is challenging to choose it, as it may currently seem.

Something as simple as a post-it note can change the world when used appropriately.
